Mon, 5/21: Explore the complications of A Doll's House and watch the final scene. Consider the power dynamic between Nora and Torvald; think about what Ibsen is saying about marriage and identity.
Homework: Annotate the last 4 pages of the play, looking for the shift in the power dynamic between Nora and Torvald. Also think about the role of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in the chasm that has appeared between Nora and Torvald.

Tues, 5/22: Using your annotated copy of the final scene, write a Claim-Evidence-Commentary paragraph about what Ibsen is suggesting in Act III of A Doll's House.
Homework: Read and annotate a set of short articles on purebred dogs for a practice lesson tomorrow in the AP-style Synthesis Essay, which will be part of your final exam next Tuesday. Use the graphic organizer to determine the main stance of each of the 4 short articles.

Wed, 5/23: Groups will create claims and outlines for an essay on the practice Synthesis topic, purebred dogs. You'll also get information today about the Summer Reading requirement for incoming juniors, and you'll learn about tutoring opportunities in the Literacy Lab.
Thurs, 5/24: You will have time to explore the 3 topics and article packets for the final exam essay, which you will be writing on Tuesday. You'll annotate the articles and prepare an outline. Also, you'll have one final (5 point) grade -- creating an "erasure poem" from a page of text, from either Things Fall Apart or A Doll's House.
Fri, 5/25: You will receive a copy of the memoir chapter from "Kaffir Boy" that will appear on next week's SAT-style portion of the final exam. We'll watch a short video with Mark Mathabane, the author of "Kaffir Boy." Read and annotate the chapter, and bring it back to use and hand in on final exam day.

Don't be forgetting about the 50 vocabulary words that will appear on the final exam!
    Vocabulary Study
Mon, 5/14: Come in with the annotated "White Privilege" essay and the front side of the response sheet completed. You'll have time with a group to work through the back side together. Then we'll discuss briefly and also look at your work with the Ch. 17 claim-making activity. Finally, you'll have time to make a multiple choice item on your ipad using one of the more difficult vocabulary words. Write a sentence, leaving a blank where the word belongs. Then list 4 possible choices of what the word might be.
Homework: Complete your multiple choice vocabulary item on your ipad. (Use any format or program.)
Tues, 5/15: Share your vocab. items with a few in a small group. Then we'll begin shifting into our final, brief unit on gender from a woman's perspective. You'll be responsible for reading one recent article related to gender and completing an analysis/response for Friday.
Wed, 5/16: Introduction to Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen and the early suffrage movement. We'll watch the first scene of "A Doll's House," and then you'll have some class time to work through your group's article analysis.
Thurs, 5/17: AP World History exam. The few of you who are in class will have time to work on your article response or other homework.
    A Doll's House
Fri, 5/18: Briefly share your article analysis. Then continue watching "A Doll's House." We'll watch the scene between Nora and Mr. Krogstad, where we learn why Nora needs so much money all the time, and how Krogstad is blackmailing her. If you were absent, you may view the scene using the YouTube link on the Doll's House page. It is from 17:50 - 25:45. Listen carefully!
NEXT WEEK: Finish "A Doll's House." Begin preparing for the final exam synthesis essay.
